The Company HEKLA



HEKLA is a Service Company, specializing in sales and servicing of automobiles and machinery. The Company’s goal is to lead the field as regards to servicing customers and the marketing of goods sold and serviced by the Company. HEKLA represents Companies renowned all over the World for quality and reliability, such as Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Mitsubishi, Scania, Caterpillar, Hiab and Goodyear.


HEKLA was established in 1933 by Sigfús Bjarnason. The Headquarters of HEKLA are located at Laugavegur in Reykjavik, occupying a spacious 12,500 square meters, and housing the Company’s Automotive Division. HEKLA’s Heavy Machinery Division has moved to new premises at Klettagardar in Reykjavik. HEKLA has Dealers and Service Agents in all major towns in Iceland.

Timeline

1933 Hekla founded by Mr. Sigfus Bjarnason.
1934 Import of fruits from Spain.
1938 Factory for uniforms and overalls was established.
1942 Sigfus Bjarnason´s family becomes the sole owner of the Company and turns it into a Ltd.
1945 HEKLA Electric Store opened, with main focus on Home Appliances
1947 HEKLA was appointed Dealer for Caterpillar Machinery and Kenwood Home Appliances.
1952 HEKLA was appointed Distributor for Goodyear tires.
1952 HEKLA became the Importer/Dealer for Volkswagen in Iceland. The VW Beetle gained instant success on the Icelandic market.
1970 Audi joined the Volkswagen Group and HEKLA started import of Audi.
1978 HEKLA took over the Dealership for General Electric, starting with Home Appliences and later to include High Technology Equipment such as Medical Equipment and Turbines for Power Plants.
1979 Import of cars from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation started and this year HEKLA was also appointed Dealer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. MHI Turbines are today in operation at two of Icelands largest Geothermal Power Plants.
1980 HEKLA was appointed Distributor for Ingersoll Rand.
1985 Import of Panasonic Communication Systems started.
1995 HEKLA was appointed Importer/Dealer for Scania Trucks and Buses.
1998 HEKLA started import of Skoda cars after Skoda Auto joined the Volkswagen Group.
2000 HEKLA started sales and service of MaK Marine Engines, a Caterpillar Company.
2000 HEKLA was appointed Dealer for Scana Volda Marine Transmission and Propellar Equipment.
2001 HEKLA took over the Dealership for Gjerstad Machinery Implements.
2001 HEKLA started import of Combilift and Aisle Master Lift Truks.
2002 HEKLA started sales and services of HIAB Cranes and MULTILIFT Hooklifts.
2003 Sigfús Bjarnason's Family sells their shares in HEKLA.
2003 HEKLA's Machinery Division moves to a new and state of the art Service Center in Klettagardar.
